What is an eSIM, and why should you care?

A short, unhurried explanation for travelers who keep hearing the word.

An eSIM is the SIM card already inside your phone: software, not plastic. Instead of buying a plastic chip at the airport, you tap a QR code on the way to your gate and your phone starts behaving like it's local the moment you land. No fumbling with tiny trays, no swapping your home number out, no risk of losing the one you came with.

The market has grown noisy in the last two years. Twenty-plus providers now compete for the same traveler, and the bottom of the market has cratered: a working 1 GB plan for Japan or Thailand now costs less than a coffee at the airport. Coverage has gotten better. Apps have gotten cleaner. Even Holafly, once the only unlimited option worth having, has serious unlimited competitors for the first time.

That said, the providers are not interchangeable. Coverage quality varies wildly by destination; some piggyback on premium local carriers, others on budget MVNOs with measurably slower speeds.
