Network coverage in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea's network infrastructure includes Digicel PNG, Vodafone PNG, and bmobile-Vodafone, all operating 4G LTE in their coverage zones. Digicel holds the largest market share and the broadest geographic reach. Port Moresby's main commercial district around Waigani and Boroko has working 4G from Digicel and bmobile.

Lae, the country's second city and main port, has urban 4G. Madang on the north coast has intermittent 4G at the market and harbor area. The Kokoda Track, Goroka in the Eastern Highlands, and the Sepik River region have extremely limited or no coverage.

International eSIM provider access to PNG networks is very restricted, making this one of the hardest destinations globally to find eSIM coverage for.

Coverage analysis

Papua New Guinea has one of the world's lowest telecom coverage rates relative to its land area. Port Moresby's urban core has usable 4G at the Jackson's Airport terminal, downtown Waigani, and the main Gordons market area. The Coral Sea coastline near the capital gets signal at resort areas.

Tufi Resort in Oro Province has limited connectivity for dive guests. The Kokoda Track has no coverage across its 96-kilometer route from Kokoda Village to Owers' Corner. The Highlands Highway between Lae and Mount Hagen has signal at major towns but not between.

The Sepik River from Wewak to Ambunti is largely offline. Rabaul on New Britain Island has 4G at the town site from Digicel. Expect to be offline for any serious adventure travel into PNG's interior.

Activation

eSIM availability for Papua New Guinea is severely limited. If a plan becomes available, install it before landing at Jacksons International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby. Digicel provides the broadest coverage and activates at the terminal.

Physical Digicel SIM cards are available at the airport and are currently the most reliable option for visitors. Verify your eSIM provider's PNG network access before purchasing. Download offline maps for all planned routes, including Google Maps offline tiles for Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, and the Highlands Highway before departure from Australia or any connecting hub.

Data usage tips

Papua New Guinea requires more extensive offline preparation than almost any other global destination. Download all navigation maps, accommodation addresses, and tour contact details before leaving Port Moresby for the provinces. Budget 300-400 MB per day in Port Moresby for essential data use.

Port Moresby's Ela Beach and the National Museum have 4G. Bring physical copies of permits for Kokoda Track and Highland festivals, as connectivity to verify digital passes is unreliable. Satellite communicators are practical for remote trekking and river journeys.

How we evaluated plans for Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea eSIM plans are rare and expensive when available, reflecting the isolated infrastructure market and high roaming wholesale costs. The benchmark rate for PNG connectivity runs around $5.99/GB when plans are listed. No fixed plans are currently confirmed in this comparison.

Physical Digicel SIM cards in Port Moresby currently offer more reliable access. Check current eSIM provider availability directly before travel, as the market changes as carriers negotiate wholesale access agreements.

Questions about Papua New Guinea eSIMs

What is the best eSIM for Papua New Guinea?+
HelloRoam covers 185+ countries with eSIM plans, though Papua New Guinea coverage depends on local carrier availability. Digicel PNG provides the broadest national network coverage, but international eSIM provider access to PNG networks is very restricted. Physical Digicel SIM cards at Jackson's International Airport in Port Moresby are currently the most reliable connectivity option for visitors in 2026.
How much does an eSIM for Papua New Guinea cost?+
HelloRoam's eSIM plans for 185+ countries start at $3.49, with Papua New Guinea pricing subject to local carrier partnerships. Reference pricing runs around $5.99/GB, significantly above the Pacific average. No fixed plans are confirmed in this comparison at this time. Physical Digicel SIM cards purchased at Port Moresby Airport offer more competitive local rates for visitors with unlocked phones.
How do I activate an eSIM in Papua New Guinea?+
HelloRoam eSIMs activate in under 2 minutes via QR code scan on any compatible device. Digicel PNG provides the widest coverage footprint. Verify your provider's PNG network access before purchasing any plan. Physical Digicel SIMs from the airport terminal remain the current practical standard for visitor connectivity.
How much data do I need in Papua New Guinea?+
Port Moresby needs 300 to 400 MB per day for essential navigation and messaging. Outside the capital, you are largely offline for any interior or Highlands travel. Download all hotel addresses, tour operator contacts, and route maps before leaving Port Moresby. Expect no data access on the Kokoda Track or any Sepik River itinerary.
Does my phone support eSIM in Papua New Guinea?+
iPhone XS or newer, Pixel 3a or newer, and Galaxy S20 or newer support eSIM technology. Papua New Guinea uses 4G LTE frequencies. However, eSIM access to PNG networks is currently very limited for international visitors. Physical SIM compatibility with Digicel PNG is more relevant for most travelers, and check eSIM provider availability directly before purchase.
Does eSIM work outside Port Moresby?+
Digicel and bmobile provide 4G in Lae, Madang, and Rabaul town areas. The Kokoda Track has no coverage across its 96 km route. The Highlands Highway between Lae and Mount Hagen has signal at major towns only, and the Sepik River corridor is largely offline. PNG's interior and island provinces have extremely limited infrastructure beyond the main urban centers.
What connectivity should I expect for a Kokoda Track expedition?+
The Kokoda Track has no mobile coverage for its entire 96-kilometer route between Kokoda Village and Owers' Corner. Satellite communicators like Garmin inReach or SPOT devices are standard kit for serious trekkers. Download offline maps via Gaia GPS or Maps.me before Port Moresby departure. Emergency satellite messaging devices are strongly recommended for any multi-day PNG wilderness expedition.
Is PNG safe to travel and will my phone work there?+
Port Moresby has working 4G from Digicel and bmobile in the main Waigani and Boroko commercial areas. Security conditions in Port Moresby require caution, particularly outside tourist areas. Highlands and Sepik regions require guided group travel, and check your government's current travel advisory before booking. Physical Digicel SIM with 4G is the practical connectivity standard for 2026 visitors.
